(36โ-48โ tall) Persian Lily (Fritillaria persica) is an elegant favorite thatโs been in garden cultivation for many years. The bulbs emerge as gray-green stems covered in lance-shaped, slightly twisted foliage. In mid-spring they develop blossoms at the top third of the stem. Stems can contain anywhere from 7 to 30 nodding plum-purple bells that contrast perfectly with the gray foliage below. A well-drained sunny spot is a must for this Middle Eastern native as it is prone to rot if kept too wet โ particularly over the winter. However, some afternoon shade is welcome if planted in very hot areas of the country. Rich soil is also recommended. Plant bulbs 8โ deep and space 9โ apart. Fritillaries often give off a musky scent on a sunny day โ probably one of the reasons they are so deer resistant. Robust and vigorous โ a great garden bulb for the adventurous gardener!
