Lady’s Mantle is quite versatile in the garden. Plants tolerate full sun to full shade, making them useful beneath trees and in transitional areas of the garden. They are not particular about soil type or pH, but do not tolerate dry soils. Ideal conditions include moist, well-draining soils in morning sun. Pair with Geraniums, Peonies, Hostas, Catmint, and Ferns. Provide afternoon shade in hot climates. Lady’s Mantle originated in the temperate, mountainous Eastern Carpathians and the Caucasus, and plants are best suited for zones 3-8. Plants spread gradually by rhizomatous roots, and also reseed profusely under ideal growing conditions. Lady’s Mantle (Alchemilla mollis) are considered invasive in Oregon and Alaska. Seed production can be easily managed by trimming spent flowers after bloom. Lady’s Mantle flowers are commonly used in dried arrangements; to dry flowers, cut at the peak of bloom and hang to dry in a dark room.
